AN HONEST COMPARISON

Build it yourself, or have it built for you?

Both routes are legitimate. This page is the comparison we wish more owners saw before picking one — including the costs that never appear on a pricing page.

DIY fits you when…

  • You genuinely enjoy building software — the tinkering is fun, not a chore.
  • You (or someone on the team) are comfortable with technical tools and logic.
  • You have the evenings and weekends to build it — and to keep maintaining it.
  • The tool is simple: one clear job, few users, no tricky integrations.
  • You want to learn how these platforms work, and the tool is the excuse.

If most of these are you: build it. Sincerely. A no-code platform in the hands of someone who enjoys it is a fine way to get a tool.

Done-for-you fits you when…

  • Your time is worth more in the business than in a builder's settings screens.
  • The tool matters enough that "who fixes it when it breaks?" needs a real answer.
  • The team is growing — per-user platform pricing is starting to sting.
  • The tool has outgrown simple: multi-step workflows, permissions, integrations.
  • You tried DIY already, and the maintenance is eating the time it was meant to save.

If most of these are you: hand it over. Your evenings are a real cost, even when no invoice arrives for them.

Count the Whole Cost

The comparison most owners make is subscription price against subscription price. That misses where the DIY route actually charges you.

The DIY total is the platform subscription (often per user, so it grows with the team), plus the automations and add-ons that turn out to be separate products, plus the weekends spent learning and building, plus — the part that never ends — your time as the tool's unpaid maintainer. When the platform changes something and the tool breaks on a Monday morning, the fix comes out of your week.

The done-for-you total is one flat number. Ours is $99/month — we build it, host it, and update it. Unlimited users (fair use). Monthly, cancel anytime. Your data exports free, anytime. That is 2026 signup pricing, locked in for as long as you stay subscribed — the list price ($199/month) applies to signups from 2027. No builder to learn, no maintenance on your plate, and no per-seat meter running as you hire.

Put both totals side by side for a tool your whole team uses, and the flat price is usually the smaller number — before counting a single weekend.

Already halfway down the DIY road?

Nothing you built is wasted. A working-but-creaky DIY tool is the best specification a replacement can have — it shows exactly which fields your team uses and which ideas turned out to be unnecessary. Hand it over and say “like this, but I never want to maintain it again.”

And if you built a full app prototype with an AI builder and got stuck near the finish line, finishing it is part of our Idea to App service — start with the $500 audit. Tool-specific guides: Replit, Bolt, Lovable, and v0.
